Graduate Students: Cohort III

Crystal Sankey is currently teaching in a 3rd grade classroom at Heffren Elementary. She was an intern in Anne Hedgers’ 3rd grade classroom at Bret Harte Elementary School and Keri Mendez' classroom at NKO. As an undergraduate, she majored in Human Development. She chose to enter UTEP because she believes that teaching is very important work and she wants to be the best teacher possible.When she’s not teaching, she enjoys watching movies, going hiking, and sleeping.

 

Sonia Wang is currently teaching 8th grade at Barton Elementary. She was an intern in Tonya Rivera’s 6th grade classroom at Carnegie Elementary School and Maureen Belanski's 8th classroom at Barton. As an undergraduate, she majored in Human Development. She chose to enter UTEP because it is a teaching program that really focuses on developing well-rounded, comprehensive urban teachers.When she’s not teaching, she enjoys dancing and reading good children’s literature at a quaint Chicago cafe.

 

Eric Saathoff is currently teaching 3rd grade at Barton Elementary School. He completed an internship in Laura Taube’s 3rd grade classroom at Barton Elementary School and in a 6th grade classroom at Sexton with Rana Khan. As an undergraduate, he majored in French Language and Literature. He chose to enter UTEP because he believes that good work in urban education is the best way he can serve society.When he’s not teaching, he enjoys eating ice cream, playing bass, and going to church.

 

Kyla McCartney is also teaching 3rd grade at Barton. She worked as an intern in Maura Burke and Toi Smith’s 4th grade classrooms at North Kenwood Oakland School and then with Fran Verdecchia at Bret Harte in 2nd grade. As an undergraduate, she majored in History. She chose to enter UTEP because she knew she wanted to teach and UTEP offered the best preparation.When she’s not teaching, she enjoys playing rugby with one of Chicago’s club teams.

 

Lindsey Mann is currently teaching math at Perspectives Calument. She was an intern with Ruth Seward at Carnegie and then with Todd Atler’s 5th grade classroom at Sawyer Elementary School. As an undergraduate, she majored in Mathematics. She chose to enter UTEP because she wanted to work in Chicago Public Schools.

 

Esther Angulo teaches 2nd grade at Zapata School. She completed an internship with Keri Mendez' 2nd grade classroom at North Kenwood Oakland School and with Stephanie Matous at Zapata. As an undergraduate, she majored in Latin American Studies. She chose to enter UTEP because she saw a need for effective teachers in CPS. When she’s not teaching, she enjoys taking dance classes and knitting.

 

Eliza Ramirez is currently teaching middle grades at Zapata. She was an intern in Maureen Belanski’s 8th grade classroom at Barton Elementary School and worked with Jose Trigeros and Kim Alamar at Whittier. As an undergraduate, she majored in Law, Letters, and Society. She chose to enter UTEP because she sees teaching as a way to give back to the community.When she’s not teaching, she enjoys watching movies and Law and Order, reading at cafes, and spending time with her family and friends.

 

Kandice Washington has her own Kindergarten classroom in California. She was an intern in Shannon Justice’s 3rd grade classroom at North Kenwood Oakland School and with Raquel Davis at Carnegie. As an undergraduate, she majored in Psychology. She chose to enter UTEP because she wanted to make an impact on our community through the school system.When she’s not teaching, she enjoys writing poetry and singing.

Tracie Kenyon is teaching in a primary grade classroom in Madison. She worked with Mandy Djikas in the MAC classroom at North Kenwood Oakland School and then with Anne Hedger at Bret Harte. As an undergraduate, she majored in Public Policy. She chose to enter UTEP because she believes in the importance of education and teaching. When she’s not teaching, she enjoys exercising, and reading children’s literature.
